Food & Bhagwadgita

Food occupies an important place in the lives of all human beings. The nature of food, its quality, quantity, frequency of eating and timing play an important role and hence, are an integral part of our lifestyle management.
Bhagwadgita identifies 3 primary characteristics in all human beings and calls them Gunas. These are described as Satvik, Rajsik, Tamsik. Each one of us has these 3 gunas present in us. There are also 3 categories of food corresponding to these gunas & our food preferences. There is thus symbiotic relationship b/w what we are & what we eat.  This is in Bhagwadgita serial number 7,8,9 & 10 in chapter 17: -
"Aahar Tu Api Sarvasya
Trividha Bhavati Priya
Yagya Tapa Tatha Danam
Tesham Bhedam Imam Shrinu"
Krishna tells that everybody has a preference for food in accordance to his nature and gunas. Sacrifice, austerities and charity are also of 3 kinds & I shall describe to you the differences in them all.
Aayu Satva Bal Arogya
Sukh Priti Vivardhna
Rasya Snigdha Sthira Hridhya
Aahara Satvik Priya"
People with Satvik dispositions are naturally fond of foods that bring about enhancement in age, intellect & strength, improve health & happiness and induce zesr for life. Foods that possess life-invigorating juices, adequate fat and prepared to be fully agreeable to taste, remain their preferred choice.
"Katu Amal Lavan Atyushan
Tikshan Ruksha Vidhahina
Ahara Rajasaya Ishta
Dukh Shoka Mayprada"
Bitter, sour, peppered with excess salt, very hot and dry kind of food is preferred by people with rajsik tendencies. These foods caused acidity, tension and are a cause of miseey.
"Yatayamam Gatrasam
Puti Parushitam Cha Yat
Uchishtam Chamedhyam
Bhojanam Tamaspriyam"
Semi cooked, smelly, tasteless, decomposed and putrid foods that are prepared in an impure manner are eaten by people with Tamsik tendencies.
Important corollary to all this is that food had a symbiotic relationship with our state of body as well as our mind and intellect. It is not difficult to discern the reason for this situation. Unhealthy body will certainly not possess a healthy mind. Healthy eating habits, agreeable to our body systems will keep us in a cheerful disposition, generating positive energy that is entirely conducive to maximizing our output and cooperating with others in all our endeavours.
